AMINA Bank and Crypto Finance Group Launch Successful Payment Pilot on Google Cloud
AMINA Bank AG, in collaboration with Crypto Finance Group and several banking partners, has achieved a significant milestone by completing a pilot program that showcases how distributed ledger technology (DLT) can enhance cross-border, cross-currency, and point-of-sale transactions. Conducted on the Google Cloud Universal Ledger (GCUL) platform, this pilot facilitates nearly instantaneous, around-the-clock settlements of fiat currency transactions among Swiss-regulated financial institutions, all while upholding the security and compliance standards typical of traditional banking practices.
This pilot initiative addresses critical challenges within current global payment systems, which often see cross-border transactions taking multiple days to settle and incurring hefty fees. By utilizing DLT as the foundational infrastructure while retaining commercial bank money for wholesale transactions, this pilot exemplifies how payment systems can be modernized without introducing new digital currencies or disrupting existing regulatory frameworks.
Franz Bergmueller, CEO of AMINA Bank, emphasized the significance of the pilot, stating, “Google Cloud’s GCUL demonstrates that innovation and stability can coexist. This pilot enables compliant, near-real-time settlements within the existing banking structure. With AMINA’s extensive global network and partnerships, we are uniquely equipped to expand this pilot internationally and showcase DLT’s potential to revolutionize the global financial landscape.”
Stijn Vander Straeten, CEO of Crypto Finance Group, remarked, “This pilot exemplifies our collective efforts to usher in the next generation of financial markets. As the Currency Operator for this initiative, we are laying the groundwork for reliable digital payments and tokenized assets. The pilot’s success reinforces Switzerland’s status as a premier hub for digital financial innovation.”
Revamping Payment Infrastructure Within Swiss Banking Frameworks
In this pilot initiative, Crypto Finance Group acted as the designated Currency Operator, which involved establishing clear transaction rules and ensuring that all participants followed the agreed-upon processes on GCUL. The group also facilitated the onboarding of participating banks and oversaw compliance with the pilot’s framework, while the actual settlement and payment execution were managed directly by the involved parties.
AMINA Bank, along with other financial institutions, integrated this technology into their core banking systems, providing select clients with near-instant settlement capabilities without disrupting existing operations.
Matt Renner, President and Chief Revenue Officer of Google Cloud, expressed pride in supporting Switzerland’s vision for advanced financial infrastructure, stating, “Cloud-native infrastructure has the potential to transform financial services while adhering to regulatory requirements. The pilot between AMINA Bank and Crypto Finance illustrates how state-of-the-art technology can enable rapid, secure, and compliant payment solutions.”
The high-performance distributed ledger technology of GCUL allows for real-time transactions involving traditional money and assets, seamlessly integrating into existing banking workflows. This model empowers institutions to develop and launch innovative client services on Google’s secure and scalable infrastructure, without disrupting their deposit bases or lending activities.
The successful outcome of this pilot sets the stage for wider adoption. The upcoming phase will focus on expanding the platform by including additional financial institutions, transitioning from controlled testing to live operational status, and ultimately introducing advanced features such as cross-border payments and point-of-sale solutions for consumers.
