BBVA Spain Collaborates With Ripple For Digital Asset Custody Technology To Expand Crypto Trading Offerings

Ripple Enhances Partnership with BBVA to Boost Crypto Custody Services

Ripple, a leading provider of digital asset infrastructure catering to financial institutions, has announced an extension of its collaboration with BBVA, a prominent Spanish bank. This partnership will see BBVA leveraging Ripple’s advanced digital asset custody technology to enhance its cryptocurrency trading services, reflecting a growing demand for secure and compliant digital asset solutions in the region. In July 2025, BBVA initiated a cryptocurrency trading and custody service for Bitcoin and Ethereum, making it accessible to all adult retail customers in Spain.

Ripple’s Custody Technology to Support BBVA’s Crypto Trading Services

Ripple has established itself as a vital provider of essential services needed by financial organizations to securely store, exchange, and manage digital assets. Through its partnership with BBVA, Ripple supplies its institutional-grade custody technology to support the bank’s crypto trading and custody offerings for BTC and ETH, which are now available to retail clients across Spain. Under this agreement, BBVA utilizes Ripple’s non-custodial infrastructure designed for crypto assets, ensuring a fast and secure custody service for various tokenized assets, including cryptocurrencies. This collaboration not only fosters the development of BBVA’s digital asset ecosystem but also positions the bank to better meet its clients’ growing interest in crypto investments.

The partnership marks a significant long-term relationship between Ripple and BBVA, building on previous collaborations that began in October 2024, when Ripple provided its custody solutions to BBVA operations in Switzerland and Turkey. Projections indicate that by 2030, the total value of virtual assets under custody could reach $16 trillion, with tokenized assets potentially representing 10% of the global GDP. This underscores the importance of custody services as foundational to digital asset ventures, facilitating new applications in areas such as stablecoin issuance, asset management, and tokenization.

With the implementation of the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation across the European Union, banks are increasingly encouraged to introduce crypto asset products that align with customer expectations. BBVA, a key player in the regional banking landscape, is committed to providing a secure and regulated environment for crypto assets, and its partnership with Ripple is a significant step towards achieving this goal. BBVA will utilize Ripple’s Custody technology, which features enterprise-level software architecture tailored for digital asset custodians, cryptocurrency exchanges, and over-the-counter (OTC) trading desks, ensuring the secure storage and management of crypto assets while adhering to high security standards.

Overall, Ripple’s custody infrastructure empowers financial institutions like BBVA to respond effectively to the rising demand for cryptocurrency access, all while adhering to rigorous legislative and operational compliance requirements.
